• 1933; de ergot (de seigle) et stérol, d'apr. ergostérine (fin XIXe)
♦ Biochim. Alcool stérolique préparé autrefois à partir de l'ergot (II, 1o) et aujourd'hui de la levure, qui se transforme en vitamine D antirachitique sous l'effet des rayons ultraviolets.

● ergostérol nom masculin (de ergot et stérol) Alcool stéroïdique insaturé, isolé de l'ergot de seigle et de la levure de bière. (Il se transforme en vitamine D2, ou calciférol, sous l'action des rayons ultraviolets.)
